Is Your Dog’s Collar the Right Fit?

6 Tips to Help You Decide

1: MEASURING

No tape measure? No problem.

If you only have a ruler, you can use a piece of paper.

Simply cut a sheet of paper into a long strip and wrap it around your pup’s neck.

Where the end of the strip meets the rest of the strip is the circumference you need.

Pinch that spot on the strip with your finger (or mark it with a pencil) and then measure it with your ruler.

You can also do this with a piece of string.

2: LOCATION

A good collar should sit just behind the ears.

This will allow for good control while avoiding some of the neck strain some dogs put on themselves when pulling too hard.

3: THE TWO-FINGER RULE

A classic bit of advice for making sure a collar isn’t too tight or loose is the “two-finger rule.”

If you can slip two fingers between the back of your dog’s neck and the collar (without difficulty), that should be a comfortable fit.

Works pretty well when trying on jeans too. 😂

4: TAKE YOUR TIME

Some pets have no issues, but others may be natural-born nudists and find collars to be an annoyance.

Start slow.

Slip their collar on for about 5 to 10 minutes a few times a day.

After a week, most will get used to it.

If not, make sure there’s nothing else wrong – (too tight, rough material, etc.).

5: MAKE IT FUN

• Hang their collar by the front door and make it part of the “let’s go for a walk” routine.

• Let your dog play with a new collar (supervised of course).

• Teach them to bring it to you when asking for a walk.

• If they see it as their own property, like one of their toys, they’ll be less prone to avoid putting it on.

6: NOT 24/7

Collars are great for playing outside and going for walks, but not all day and night…

When inside the house… Let your fur-babies go “au naturale” and leave the collar by the door.

Their neck fur will experience less “hat-head,” and they’ll generally feel more comfortable too.

And when you leave your dog alone at home, it’s best to keep their collar off too.

A curious pup may get it caught on something…

Why take the risk?
