How to Prepare Your Home for the Dog Days of Summer

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to make sure you and your family will be staying cool and saving money. Here are some hot tips for preparing your home for this season.

The Art of Air Conditioner Maintenance

OUTSIDE:

Time for the Weedwhacker!

During the colder months your AC’s condenser may have built up a pretty good nest around itself.

Clear away any leaves and sticks that have piled up and trim any weeds that have begun to take root.

Your condenser needs room to breathe so give it some (2 feet all around is recommended).

• INSIDE:

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub~

Before pushing that “ON” button, your filters probably need a trip to the kitchen sink.

The last thing your family needs is a house full of dust and allergens…

Or better yet, use the garden hose and a brush to get them squeaky clean.

If your filters are the disposable type, make sure you have fresh ones standing by before that first warm day of the year hits…

Shade is Your Friend

OUTSIDE:

Whether you plant tall shrubs or trees, or install awnings, whatever you can do to keep the sun from hitting your windows directly can have a noticeable effect on how warm your house gets. And in turn, how high your electric bill gets…

INSIDE:

Consider getting some heavier curtains, blinds, or drapes to keep that sun out during the brightest time of day.

Ceiling Fans

In larger rooms, as long as your ceilings are tall enough, a ceiling fan can do wonders for circulating the air and managing the temperature of a home.

• Gesundheit!!!

Ceiling fans are a dust bunny’s favorite place to hide.

Make sure to dust the tops of the blades before you give them their first spin of the season.

You may even need to wipe them down as in some homes they build up a greasy layer.

Reverse Engines Captain!

In the summer months, switching your rotation to counterclockwise is best.

This circulates air and creates a downdraft bringing a nice cool breeze your way.

Finally… Call the Pros.

Yes, you’ve done a great job prepping your home for summer…

But your air conditioning system should still be serviced by a professional.

Having your AC unit serviced once a year is the best way to ensure your family stays comfortable all summer long.

Just like a car, regular tune-ups keep things running smoothly and are a lot less expensive than a repair.

Plus, a well-tuned machine is going to run more efficiently.

And that can of course help keep those electric bills under control too.
