Why “Jankura?” 왜 “잔쿠라?”라고 이름을 지었나요?

After holding a contest for best name for a share-studio/art academy in Seoul, the winning idea came from my friend Paul Rembish, who suggested, ” my honest opinion would be to somehow pay homage to Miss J… how cool would that be to spread her teaching legacy to another continent? Its not often we get to honor our mentors.”

서울에서 공동 작업실 겸 화실을 위해 이름짓기 컨테스트를 열었습니다. 그리고 “솔직한 생각으로는 J 선생님의 오마주는 어떨까 싶어. 미대륙 밖까지 자신의 교육적 유산이 전해지는 건 엄청난 일이잖아. 멘토에게 감사함을 표현할 기회가 흔한 건 아니니까.”라고 제안한 제 친구 폴 렘비쉬Paul Rembish의 아이디어가 우승을 차지했습니다.

Ms. J (Cheryl A. Jankura) was our high school art teacher. In her 35 year career in the Southington, CT school system(and even after retirement) she was able to impact the lives of thousands of students with warmth, honesty and laughter. It was in her portfolio prep class and after-school art club that I learned about how art can take time and that sometimes one must be patient to create. Before her classes I was happy drawing comic book images of vampires and skulls on all my school notebooks. She taught me to produce artworks and inspired us all to work from our hearts.

J 선생님(셰릴 A. 잔쿠라Cheryl A. Jankura)은 제가 다니던 고등학교의 미술 선생님이었습니다. 코네티컷 교육계에서 35년간 몸담으시고 은퇴 후에도 계속해서 멘토 역할을 하신 선생님께서는 수천명의 학생들에게 자신의 따뜻함, 정직함 그리고 웃음으로 인생에 큰 영향을 주셨습니다. 선생님이 진행하시던 포트폴리오 준비 수업과 방과후 미술 동아리에서 저는 미술은 금세 완성되는 작업이 아니며 인내심이 필요하다는 것을 배웠습니다. 선생님의 수업을 듣기 전 저는 그저 뱀파이어나 해골 등의 만화 그림을 온갖 수업 노트에 그리고 있을 뿐이었습니다. 하지만 선생님께서는 저에게 어떻게 미술작품을 만드는지 가르쳐주셨고 마음으로 작업할 수 있는 영감을 주셨습니다.

Ms. J passed away in 2011 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind thousands of people who were “blessed” enough to have experienced her presence. I want to dedicate this art space in her honor, hoping that her legacy, as Paul recommends, will spread far across the earth through the lessons learned and experiences gained at this little creative studio in the heart of Seoul.

선생님은 암 투병을 하시다 선생님을 만나는 “축복”을 받은 수천명의 학생들을 뒤로 하고 2011년에 돌아가셨습니다. 저는 선생님께 존경을 표하는 마음으로 잔쿠라 아트스페이스를 만들었으며, 서울의 중심에 있는 이 작은 창의적 공간에서 폴이 말했듯이 선생님께 배운 것들을 널리 나누고 싶습니다.
